Making healthy choices can help prevent or control many of the nation’s leading causes of death

Various studies have shown that people who lead healthy lifestyles can reduce their risk of several chronic diseases. These lifestyle factors include a healthy diet, regular exercise, and not smoking. These findings reinforce public health recommendations about healthy living. The importance of making healthy choices cannot be overemphasized. People’s lifestyles often form during their formative years. Hence, young children should be taught about healthy living practices early on.

Studies have shown that people who drink alcohol increase their risk of developing several cancers, including pharynx, liver, and mouth. Alcohol also amplifies the effects of smoking on the upper respiratory and digestive tracts. Alcohol is also linked to violence and accidental injuries. Therefore, individuals who drink excessively should cut down on drinking and avoid binge drinking. Dietary changes should also include increasing consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and extra virgin olive oil.

Newsletters include a low-cost recipe and a “Did you know?” healthy tip

To determine if the content in a nutrition newsletter is useful to people, this study conducted five focus groups with participants in three regions of Pennsylvania. Participants were provided food through a community food pantry, and their major concerns were heart disease, diabetes, dietary fat, and sodium intake. Newsletter readers were able to identify two factors that were most important to them: the usefulness of the content and the practicality of the design.
